The Tale of the White Lady

It it a known legend in our town of Millinocket, and has become to be known as a legend of New England as well. Some of us, the select few, that want to try and see the mysterious ghost woman up on the green bridge, will bring our cars up there, put them in park, and WALK across the bridge in hopes that we will come face to face with the lost soul. Although I have never encountered the phenomonal occurance myself, there are those who have, and will continue to tell the tale below:

But I have walked across the bridge at midnight...twice!

Legend says that in the 1940s or 50's era, a bride and groom were
returning from their honeymoon and driving along the Brownville
Road near Millinocket, Maine. They were nearly home when for
some unknown reason, the car swerved off the road and down an
embankment into a ditch. The new groom instructed his wife to
stay in the car and he would go get some help. When he returned,
his wife was no where to be found.

To this day people say that if you are driving down the Brownville Road, often you can see an apparition of a woman dressed in white walking along this stretch of highway either on or near the green bridge. Others say that she appears when the weather turns foul and there is a dense fog or mist. There is one account of a group of curiosity seekers that parked on the bridge with their lights out during a dense fog, hoping to get a glimpse of "The White Lady". They got a little more than they bargained for because when they turned the lights back on, the windows had fogged up as you may expect with a lot of people in the car. However, on the outside of the car in the condensation that gathered on the windows, there were hand prints all over.

It is rumored that on the original Brownville road that is next to
the new one, you can still find the wreckage of the car that crashed
that night long ago, still in the ditch. Perhaps something happened
to her on that dreadful night and her spirit returns to the place where
it believes she can find her lost groom.

What Do The Locals Believe?

I was born and raised in the millinocket area and I will say that those woods are haunted.

I was also born and raised in Millinocket, and I can say that as a high school student, one of our favorite pasttimes was fooling around with the White Lady Legend. The only creepy experience I have witnessed on the White Lady Bridge (which I drove over almost daily in the summertime) was one night when we drove up there, and sat on the bridge with the car and lights turned off for about ten minutes. We saw nothing at all. However, when we turned the car and lights back on, the windows were all fogged up, which makes sense. What doesn't make sense were the hundreds of handprints all over the windows that were clearly visible in the fog. I didn't sleep very well that night and we couldn't get away from there fast enough

Shes Real

I went down the OLD road right after the bridge (next to the river) and waaaaay down there the car is definately there flipped over on its roof untouched from the 5o's AnD lEt metell you the feeling of being watched is Overwhelming. I COULD NOTTTT GET OUTTA THERE FAST ENOUGH But NO LADY
